An Inlay, Onlay or a Crown restoration is needed when teeth are damaged
in such a manner that a filling material may not be enough to restore
the health and function of a tooth.
An inlay, onlay or a crown is an artificial replacement to a damaged
or decayed tooth. The procedure for all three is very similar, but the
amount of tooth loss dictates which is indictated for each unique situation.
These restorations can be made of different types of materials. The
choice of material is dependent on several factors: how much masking
of the discoloration desired, the strength, the location in the mouth,
etc.
An all-porcelain crown, the most esthetic type, is used when there is a desire not to show any metal, especially around the gum line of the front teeth. More severe discoloration and misalignment of teeth can be corrected this way.
